One Down 51 to Go!
The human body has over 650 distinct muscles. A third of mine have been on steady burn since Wednesday afternoon.
I knew the challenge was going to be difficult, but I overlooked how painful it is to break muscle memory. The wider takeaway and taller stance activated muscles on my right side that hadn't seen the light of day in a few years. The revamped stance feels retro, like paleolithic retro, even though my right shoulder only tilted a few degrees it feels like the knuckles on my right hand are going to scrape the ground.
My meeting with Steve Riggs on Saturday was eye opening. The new grip is taking some time to feel comfortable. I've been doing my Sergio Garcia impression in front of the mirror; grip, regrip, step away, repeat.
I'll take what Steve and I discussed with me throughout the challenge, but more than what he said was something he did. The pull-hook is my typical driver mishit and after some work on my grip and stance Steve stood in front of me and to my left...he was very much in play. But he understood where the hook was coming from and knew the new setup would eliminate it. I'll meet with many teachers this year but I don't know how many will have as deep an understanding of the golf swing as Steve.
Look for new video and stills this week, and I'll put some grip before and after shots up as well.
