Weathering the winter in style: Gift Guide and 2012 Spring Preview

Posted in Golf Fashion & Accessories by on November 7th, 2011

As we approach the colder months here in New England, we realize how important it is to control our body temperature or our surrounding climate. This winter, whether you are traveling to a warmer climate to play golf, training indoors with a simulator such as aboutGolf, or just storing the clubs away and preparing for spring, here is a guide for the climate change. Many apparel creators have found solutions in different compositions of technology and fabrics to allow the right amount of energy to pass through to moderate our degree of comfort. Some keep you warm, others keep you cool, and their important goal is to keep you dry and comfortable. Golfers today can truly appreciate how far golf apparel has come today. One thing that was apparent in playing in the Jimmy Fund Golf Tournament last month at the International in Bolton, MA, was how much golfers like to have fun but also help others and give back to the community. This holiday season, remember it is all about the spirit of giving.

Antigua

Antigua Men Golf Shirts

Whether you are buying new golf apparel as holiday gifts or for the trip down South you are planning on taking this winter, Antigua is a great choice. One reason because their shirts are not prone to wrinkling which is a quality everyone wants in a shirt, it also makes them easy to fold and pack in a gift box or your luggage. Even if you are traveling to warmer climates, you want to be prepared with a fleece or jacket for the mornings and evenings. Lightweight base layers such as the Antigua Hero developed as a micro-fleeced back jersey mock can stand-alone or can be worn under performance polo such as Exceed. is made of one of the most comfortable performance fabrics due to the 16% spandex and moisture management micro fleece. It’s light enough to be worn mildly cool temperatures and due to the technical construction it’s warm enough to hold out the unwanted elements. Add or remove layers to correspond with the fluctuations in weather that occur.

Another option is a mid-weight pullover performance fleece style such as Viper, a polyester jersey face and fleece back mesh lining and invisible zip pocket, shown here in black and Keylime. Or the Highland Desert Dry Xtra-Lite moisture management bonded interlock long sleeve full zip jacket water and wind resistant. The mentality from the tour player to the weekend golfer is that they want to be comfortable at any point during play and they look for layering options that make sense.

Antigua apparel really stands out from the rest in your closet. They are vibrant, comfortable, and made of quality materials. Its golf division also holds license agreements with the PGA Tour and LPGA so they have to be superb if they are dressing the pros. Chances are some of the sportswear in your closet has the Antigua logo on the sleeve, as their sports division also holds license agreements with MLB, NHL and NBA, along with numerous American universities.

Martin Golf – Spring 2012 Preview

Martin Logo

Golf industry icon Rick Martin has loved golf since first discovering it in the 1940s, and was drawn to professional golf by Jimmy Demaret, Byron Nelson and Ben Hogan. You may know Martin from starting and successfully selling his company Fairway & Greene that earned him such a trusted name in the golf world. Garments have remained a lifetime quest for perfection from Martin. Their fine, 100% cotton lisle golf shirts allowed for the free motion of their swing. The classic styling and the fact there weren’t logos didn’t upstage their talent.

Martin has a new company, Martin Golf Apparel with its slogan “Timeless as the Game,” based in Dallas, Texas. Spring 2012 Martin Golf is preparing to launch the first collections and will be sold by nation’s top Private Golf Clubs. The collection is already making waves in the industry, and with his new company’s first launch, Martin hopes for nothing less than the high standards. “So far,” says Martin, “acceptance has exceeded expectations at the top 50 green grass shops in the country, and it is our goal that these garments will distinguish themselves. It is not about branding, it is about a beautiful garment that men will want to wear.”

The industry was mesmerized by a version of that Polyester bug that has been around since the 1960s. This time, however, with a new young audience, there is no mention of the term ‘Polyester.’ Polyester has been replaced by terms like dry-fit or tech. By 1995, borne of his frustration with contemporary, synthetic golf shirts, Martin began a two-year search to develop the kind of fine cotton golf shirt fabric that had virtually disappeared years before. His endeavor resulted in the creation of a 100% Long Staple Pima Cotton Lisle fabric that could prevent fading and almost eliminate shrinkage – “a golf shirt that will keep its shape and also its luster after years of play,” Martin says.

Sunflower, Cozumel and Natural White were catalysts for the color in the 2012 line, and the finish of the product is very rich. The world’s finest Pima cotton will be the main ingredient in the company’s lines, the finest collars in golf feature special, collar-specific yarns. Italian Merino sweaters are also part of the spring collection. Each garment will feature excellent high-end sourcing and special high-end finishing. www.martingolfapparel.com
