Tim Geary: What is your favorite golf destination state?
Hey, Gorman had to win one of these debates sometime, so this is the month where hell freezes over. I will not attempt to argue against Hawaii as the ultimate golfing destination. I know that’s where I would go if I was granted my golfing dream vacation, but there’s one big downer to going to Hawaii and it’s not fear of a volcano exploding while you’re lining up a birdie putt. — » Read More: Tim Geary: What is your favorite golf destination state?
Tom Gorman: What is your favorite golf destination state?
One of the worst kept secrets in sports is that scrubs like Tim Geary and me get a ton of invitations to play free or discounted golf. Sure, it’s a nice perk and we try to abuse that privilege as much as possible, but so far, this writing gig at New England Golf Monthly has not turned into any assignments from Golf Digest or Golfweek. — » Read More: Tom Gorman: What is your favorite golf destination state?
Tim Geary: Does the USGA handicap system make it easy to be a sandbagger?
We are re-visiting the handicap debate in this issue because it has always been one of the most discussed and argued aspect of the game of golf. I say “game” rather than “sport” because sports are based solely on one’s natural ability and the luck factor and not on some computer’s attempt at making everything un-naturally equal. — » Read More: Tim Geary: Does the USGA handicap system make it easy to be a sandbagger?
Tom Gorman: Does the USGA handicap system make it easy to be a sandbagger?
ES. Nothing gets my golf juices boiling over more than the topic of sandbaggers. This debate seems much like the weather - everyone talks about it, but nobody does anything about it. Based on my unscientific research, it appears every club has about a dozen rag tag group of nerds and rednecks, who intentionally and shamelessly manipulate the USGA handicap system. — » Read More: Tom Gorman: Does the USGA handicap system make it easy to be a sandbagger?
Will Tiger win again? No.
While Tigers Woods’ endorsements have been drying up like a Texas prairie, there is one company for which he would be the perfect pitchman; Medic Alert. Will Tiger win again? Yes.
YES. Last time I looked, about an hour ago, the PGA TOUR had a bunch of unknown and unrecognizable kids in their 20’s dominating the leaderboard. In fact, the PGA might have to change its logo from “These Guys Are Good” to “These Kids Are Good.” — » Read More: Will Tiger win again? Yes.
Tim Geary: Should the USGA approve 16 hole golf courses?
Biddie Basketball introduces little kids to the game on six-foot high baskets. In Little League the diamond is smaller than regulation and the game lasts six innings. There are recreational leagues where competitors can play seven-on-seven in football, soccer and field hockey. Outside of professional baseball it is common to see games that last seven innings instead of nine. Why then do we have to preserve, at costs, the 18-hole round of golf? — » Read More: Tim Geary: Should the USGA approve 16 hole golf courses?
Tom Gorman: Should the USGA approve 16 hole golf courses?
How many times have you heard this wise crack at the 19th hole? A golf buddy boasts of shooting 74 and then a big-mouth at the bar roars, “What’d you play 15 holes?” It’s a ball-buster quip, but Mr. 74 will surely be filling his wallet with fresh cash, not from an ATM. — » Read More: Tom Gorman: Should the USGA approve 16 hole golf courses?
Here’s a bulletin: Life ain’t fair. Never has been, never will be.
To paraphrase former president Calvin Coolidge, The PGA Tour is in the business of business, which is to say making money. If the paying public preferred seeing a ton of young talent rather than the established players than a system would be in place to force out the old and bring in the new. Actually there is, but it isn’t fast enough for the guy on the other page. — » Read More: Here’s a bulletin: Life ain’t fair. Never has been, never will be.
