Does anyone ever get tired of watching golf being played at Pebble Beach? This always serves as a treat for me each year when I’m holed up inside as the temps drop below freezing and the cold winds howl. There seems to be no better place on Earth to play golf in my opinion. This week Tiger Woods graces us with his presence, his first appearance in 10 years at the Pro-Am, where he’ll be paired up with Tony Romo. If Romo has a great round and Tiger a bad, Romo may actually have a chance to beat him. The par 5 14th hole at Pebble is always an interesting one to watch. The scoring average was actually over par in 2011, which is incredible for a par 5. Last year D.A. Points holed out from 100 yards for eagle on the 14th, the very same hole that Bryce Molder made a 9.
The Picks A
Group - Last week Kyle Stanley went from blowing the Farmers Insurance open, to making up eight shots to beat a jittery Spencer Levin at the WMO and scored some redemption in the process. Can Levine do the same? I get nervous just watching him as he looks like he could impale himself or someone else with his putter at any moment, but he played solid golf until the home stretch last week. Add to that a T4 at Pebble a year ago, and I’ll give him the nod to start. Nick Watney is a solid guy coming off the bench. He’ll be looking to move past a horrible weekend where he went 75-74 to kill a great start (69-68) at the Farmers. Plus a T6 a year ago at Pebble.
B Group – Tiger Woods makes his much anticipated 2012 debut in the States this week. He hasn’t played the AT&T since 2002, but has great success at Pebble over the years. Woods took 3rd in Abu Dhabi a few weeks ago and his game seems to look sharp, all eyes will be on him at Pebble this week. I also like returning champ D.A. Points to start in the B group. Points is playing incredibly solid golf so far in 2012 with two top 10s, and a T12 to go along with it. He led the field in putting last year here and he’ll be teaming up with funnyman Bill Murray again this week who will surely keep him loose.
C Group – The C group is where I’m going to make a couple gambles again this week. John “Question Mark” Huh is making an early big at Rookie of the Year and keeps putting himself in contention. He just needs to figure out how to keep the momentum come Sunday. The 21 year old has made all three cuts he’s tee’d it up at and has a T6 (Farmers) and a T12 (WMO) already. If not for closing rounds of 74 and 72 respectively at those events, who knows what could have been. Backing him up I like my hometown boy James Driscoll. Driscoll is off to a solid start thus far, making the cut in all of his events and took a share of 13th place at Pebble a year ago.
Starting Foursome: Spencer Levin, Tiger Woods, D.A. Points, John Huh
On the Bench: Nick Watney, Bryce Molder, Hunter Mahan, James Driscoll
