The TOUR makes it way back to Texas for the third time in eight weeks, where they will tee it up at the Colonial Country Club for the Crowne Plaza Invitational. A much different course than last week’s TPC Sawgrass, there are many birdies to be had. Length isn’t an overwhelming advantage here, as we saw with last year’s winner Zach Johnson, who won with a -21 total. Johnson hasn’t had a very good year thus far with only one top 10 to speak of. Could this be the week he resurfaces?
The Picks
Lucas Glover is still sporting the beard, and why not, he’s playing his best golf in two years. So it seems to be working. He’s playing with a lot of confidence, with a win two weeks ago, and another strong showing last week at The PLAYERS. I’ll give him the nod to start the A group. Backing him up will be the angry South African, Rory Sabbatini.
Another course where length off the tee isn’t an overwhelming advantage, I like David Toms to rebound nicely after last week’s playoff loss. Toms has had great prior success at Colonial and also comes in with some impressive stats. He ranks 2nd in Driving Accuracy, 2nd in GIR, and 3rd in the All Around. How can you argue with that? This course also suits Ben Crane’s game as well and he’s posted two top 5’s here in the last 3 years.
For the C list starter I’m going with Colonial member Jason Day. I’m figuring he’s got quite a handful of course knowledge, and he may get a “members bounce” or two! Backing him up will be 2010 champ Zach Johnson, who’s obviously had some good success there, and seems to have his game coming around as of late.
