Fantasy Golf Picks for the Hyundai Tournament of Champions

Posted in Palopoli's Picks - Fantasy Golf by on January 6th, 2011

Let me just say that it’s been a LONG offseason. For some reason it feels longer than in years past, but maybe that’s just me. I’ve been jonesing for my Fantasy Golf fix and we’ve had to go without it since The TOUR Championship way back in September. But we’re kicking off the New Year right and diving right back in with the Hyundai Tournament of Champions.

I’ll be making my picks here on myNEGM each week, and they will be centered around the Yahoo! Fantasy Golf league format with 2 players from an “A” list, 4 players from a “B” list, and 2 players from a “C” list. You can only start 4 players for each round.

Since this a tournament for last year’s winners, the field is quite limited. Add to that the no-shows of Martin Kaymer, Phil Mickelson, and Louis Oosthuizen, and you’re lacking 3 of last year’s major winners. But fear not, there are still some big names to choose from obviously.

How can you not go with Geoff Ogilvy for your A list starter this week? Yes last year was pretty awful for him (he’s said so himself), but he’s won this event the past 2 years. Lock him up. I like a good solid backup of Graeme McDowell this week too, as he’s absolutely on fire.

Steve Stricker highlights the B list and you can’t avoid putting Mr. Consistent on that starting squad. He’s posted some very good finishes in Kapalua in year’s past as well.

Adam Scott’s career looks to be resurfacing and it’s good to see. He was all over the leaderboard towards the end of last season and he notched a much needed win to help boost his confidence. I like him to have a very big year this year. I had to avoid Anthony Kim here on the C list. I just can’t pull the trigger until I start to see a few good finishes. His game has been rough coming off surgery and I think he’s a bit of a headcase right now too.

My Thursday starting squad includes: Geoff Ogilvy, Ian Poulter, Steve Stricker, Adam Scott

Riding the pine at least until Friday is: Graeme McDowell, Hunter Mahan, Ben Crane, Zach Johnson
