Fantasy Golf Picks for the Mayakoba Golf Classic

Posted in Palopoli's Picks - Fantasy Golf by on February 23rd, 2011

This is one of those weeks where we have two tournaments going on at once. The world’s top 64 are squaring off at the Accenture Match Play Championship, while the rest of the tour tee’s it up in sunny, warm Cancun at the Mayakoba Golf Classic. Unfortunately, Fantasy Golf picks the Mayakoba as the week’s tournament. I’ve actually played the course (El Cameleon) where the Mayakoba is played, so for me it’s fun to watch.

Well the A list group didn’t give us a whole lot of selections to choose from with this limited field. But the best of the small group has to be Brian Gay, who took home the title here in 2008.

The B list gives us some more selections. I like JJ Henry who’s having a solid season so far and racked up two solid finishes in his last two tournaments (T15 and T9). Spencer Levin also comes in to this week off of two great previous starts. Last week in LA he finished up T12, but that was after a “so so” weekend, and he’s left with what could have been. I like his chances with his ball striking on this course.

Besides Aaron Baddelay, Jhonattan Vegas may be the best pick out of the bunch for this week. Badds is riding high off of his win last week, but going back to back the odds are just too great. So I’ll go with Johnny Vegas starting who continues to impress and show no signs of slowing down. On the bench, I’ll roll the dice and go with Jerry Kelly this week, taking a bit of a chance but he’s had some solid finishes here.

Starting Foursome: Brian Gay, JJ Henry, Spencer Levin, Jhonattan Vegas
Bench Players: Rory Sabbatini, David Toms, Richard Johnson, Jerry Kelly

Separately, I’m going with Paul Casey for my selection to win the Match Play this week. Last year’s runner up also has another runner up finish there, and he’s a match play stud.

My Year-to-Date Stats are:

Current Points: 1094
Points Last Week: 148
Current Percentile: 92nd
Winners picked so far: 1
Top 10s picked so far: 11
