Fantasy Golf Picks for the Transitions Championship

Posted in Palopoli's Picks - Fantasy Golf by on March 16th, 2011

This week the Tour continues its stay in sunny Florida, at the Transitions Championship, as the players try to tackle on of the toughest courses on Tour, the Copperhead Course at Innisbrook. Last year, Jim Furyk got the first of his three wins there on his way to winning the FedExCup and earning Player of the Year honors. He’s be back to defend, but his game is struggling so far this year, with only one top 10 to speak of and a lot of other “not even close’s”.

With another solid week last week I continue to ever so slowly inch up in the rankings. After two weeks in a row with a runner-up finisher, last week Francesco Molinari let me down and finished 3rd. Oh well, the streak had to end some time right?

This week’s field isn’t as strong as last week’s but there are still a lot of headliners and many guys who are riding hot streaks. None other than Nick Watney in that category. Watney is coming off his win at last week’s WGC event and he hasn’t finished outside of the top 10 in the five events he’s played this year. He’s a solid lock to start this week, even though I typically don’t start the prior week’s winner, but I’m breaking that rule for this week. As his backup I like Padraig Harrington who had a great week at the WGC with a T10, which would have been much better except for a Sunday stumble with a 73. Plus with St. Patrick’s Day tomorrow, I’m hoping he’ll have a little luck o’ the Irish.

Bubba Watson had to WD from last week’s event due to the flu, and I’m hoping he’s over that this week because last year at Innisbrook he finished 3rd and I like his chances again this year, despite the tight course. I’m rolling the dice a bit with Retief Goosen who hasn’t showed us much this year, but has had a good history at the course winning in ‘09 and a T5 last year.

For the C list starter, it’s hard to lay off Martin Kaymer who’s name just jumps out among all the other players in this group. You just have to go with the World number 1.

Starting Foursome: Nick Watney, Bubba Watson, Retief Goosen, Martin Kaymer
Bench Players: Padraig Harrington, Webb Simpson, Paul Casey, Charles Howell III

My Year-to-Date Stats are:

Current Points: 1585
Points Last Week: 155
Current Percentile: 95th
Winners picked so far: 1
Top 10s picked so far: 19
