Fantasy Golf Picks for the Valero Texas Open

Posted in Palopoli's Picks - Fantasy Golf by on April 13th, 2011

This week the Valero Texas Open has a lot to live up to after probably one of the most exciting Masters ever. It’s kind of like going to bat after the guy who just hit a grand slam. Nevertheless the season must go on and there is still plenty of drama and history to be made. Personally I feel like I’m coming down off a serious sugar high after that finish on Sunday and I can only imagine how the players that were in the mix felt! This week’s field is a bit sparse but there are still some headliners showing up in San Antonio.

As for my Masters picks…simply put, I got creamed last week. My picks were flat out awful. But who would have thought that Phil Mickelson, Nick Watney, Steve Stricker, AND Bubba Watson all would have been complete duds?

This week’s field is a bit light on talent, as would be expected after a Major, but there are still a few guys in the field who played great at Augusta last week. You just have to hope they aren’t too mentally and physically drained after such a demanding tournament all around. To start in the A group, you have to go with Geoff Ogilvy. The Aussie made a great run last week and his game is starting to show signs of life. I like Martin Laird as a strong backup in that group as well. He continues to rank high in many of the stat categories that matter (7th in the all-around, and 18th in putting).

I’m hoping that Spencer Levin is rested after a week off, and a missed cut the week before. He continues to play well and with a T9 here last year, he’s a solid option. I also like Bo Van Pelt who had a great showing in Augusta last week  (T8) and is riding high off an awesome back 9 on Sunday.

The C list starter is an easy choice. Adam Scott, the returning champ to San Antonio as well and the guy who made an amazing run on Sunday at the green jacket. A pair of 67’s on the weekend at Augusta will certainly have his confidence high.

Starting Foursome: Geoff Ogilvy, Spencer Levin, Bo Van Pelt, Adam Scott
Bench Players: Martin Laird, Brendan de Jong, Justin Leonard, Jimmy Walker

My Year-to-Date Stats are:

Current Points: 2084
Points Last Week: 108
Current Percentile: 95th
Winners picked so far: 2
Top 5s picked so far: 15
