Fantasy Golf Picks for the Waste Management Phoenix Open

With yet another foot of snow dumped on us here in the North East it’s hard to even imagine getting out on the links any time soon. It’s somewhat torturous watching the beautiful, lush, green locations the Tour is stopping in. This week it’s no exception as they head to sunny warm Scottsdale for the Waste Management Open. The par 3 16th hole is the highlight of the week with it’s stadium like atmosphere and well lubricated patrons. Some golf purists aren’t a fan, but I love it and I think it makes for great watching, even if it is a bit Happy Gilmore-esque.

Well last I said I wasn’t touching Phil Mickelson and opted for the sure thing in Tiger. That didn’t pay off too well for me huh? Phil certainly surprised me, but I’m not really sure why. He’s a notoriously strong starter to the season. That, along with his play from last week is why I’m starting him this week. He’s won here twice before but hasn’t seen great success as of late in this tournament, but going off of his stellar play last week I have to start him. Dustin Johnson is a strong option off the bench as he snuck in last week with a great Sunday and a 3rd place finish.

In the “B” list I like returning champion Hunter Mahan, who despite an over par Sunday last week, played well and notched a T6 finish. This list is filled with great other options as well. But I’ll start Bubba Watson who looked like he could do no wrong last week, and his length on this course will certainly be an advantage.

Ok, I’m jumping on the Jhonny Vegas train, just hope it’s not too late. I said a few weeks ago when he won, I was all about to pick him and decided against it. Then last week figured he couldn’t follow it up, and that was mistake number 2 for me. So this week I’ll give him the nod and see what happens. He doesn’t look to be affected by the massive amount of attention he’s getting, and his game is sharp. He’s fun to watch. On the pine I’ll give Ryan Moore another shot, after the last time I picked him and he WD due to illness. Moore will be mic’d up this Thursday. He’s also seen some decent success at this tournament in the past as well.
