Fantasy Golf Picks for the Wells Fargo Championship

Posted in Palopoli's Picks - Fantasy Golf by on May 5th, 2011

Another week, another Tiger-less field. I guess we’re getting used to this by now. Woods won’t be in the field at the Wells Fargo Championship after he announced a couple weeks ago that he injured himself during the Masters. The field is pretty deep regardless, and Rory McIlroy is back to defend his title. Last year McIlroy was extremely impressive with a final-round 62 to capture his first (and so far only) PGA Tour title.

This week I’ll be bypassing Phil Mickelson and giving the nod to Nick Watney to start the A group. Mickelson is just a huge unknown right now. He had a great finish here as a runner-up last year, but I’m going to take a pass. On the bench will be Dustin Johnson. Quail Hollow is a bombers course, and he could do quite well.

Again the B group is stacked with great options and provides some difficult decisions. I wouldn’t have any hesitations starting Bubba Watson again, but I need to reserve his starts, it’s still a long season! We’ll see how Webb Simpson responds after a tough playoff loss to Bubba last week. I think he’ll be looking for some redemption, and he’s had a great year thus far, so I’ll give him the start. Rickie Fowler, who surprisingly only has one top 10 all year, had a great showing at Quail Hollow last year, so I’m hoping he comes back to life a bit this week.

For the C group, how can you not go with the defending champ in Rory McIlroy? Set it and forget it. As he continues to prove, the kid can flat out play. He also proved that the Sunday in Augusta won’t be weighing him down.

Starting Foursome: Nick Watney, Webb Simpson, Rickie Fowler, Rory McIlroy
Bench Players: Dustin Johnson, Kevin Na, Brendan de Jong, Tommy Gainey

My Year-to-Date Stats are:

Current Points: 2558
Points Last Week: 152
Current Percentile: 95th
