The TOUR rolls up to North Carolina this week for the Wyndham Championship and it’s the last chance for anyone not inside the top 125 in the FedExCup standings to qualify for the PGA TOUR Playoffs for the FedExCup, which begin the following week at The Barclays. A few big name players like Ernie Els, Paul Casey, and Padraig Harrington are on the bubble and need a good showing this week in order to get inside that top 125 number.
The week after a major the field is always a little light, however this week’s at the Wyndham isn’t too bad with many guys trying to improve on their FedEx Cup rankings. Jim Furyk is certainly having an off year and not looking anything like the Player of the Year we saw in 2010. He somewhat looked like his old self at the PGA last week for a short time with a 65 on Friday. His putter is what’s holding him back. He’ll take the bench this week with South Carolina native Lucas Glover getting the start. He’s cooled off from where he was earlier in the season, but his prior success at this week’s host course gives me a good feeling that he’ll play well.
In the B group there’s no avoiding David Toms. I missed starting him for Sunday this past week and missed out on some serious points. The 44 year old is playing like he’s 30 and having an amazing year. With a T4 last week he now has six top 10s in 17 starts. Even though he missed the cut at the PGA, I still like the North Carolina native Webb Simpson to start as well. Despite an MC at the PGA he was on an absolute tear before that. He leads the TOUR in the all-around statistic and ranks 2nd in birdie average.
Brandt Snedeker gets the nod for the C group. He won the Wyndham in 2007 before they switched courses to the current venue at Sedgefield Country Club. After the move he’s still finished T5 and T8 in the last two years respectively.
Starting Foursome: Lucas Glover, David Toms, Webb Simpson, Brandt Snedeker
On the Bench: Jim Furyk, Bill Haas, Brendan de Jong, Charles Howell III
