After another exciting stop in Hilton Head, the TOUR moves a little bit west over to New Orleans this week for the Zurich Classic of New Orleans. Luke Donald gave it a good run at Harbour Town to try and take over the world #1 but came up just short, and instead Lee Westwood took a victory (over a “minor league” field by the way) in Indonesia and reclaimed the spot over Martin Kaymer. Donald is in the field again this week to try and redeem himself after losing in an exciting 3-hole playoff to Brandt Snedeker. The field this week features a lot of headliners with Donald, McDowell, and Bubba Watson, to name just a few. Last year Jason Bohn held off a charging Jeff Overton to win by 2-strokes.
This week we’ll find out what Luke Donald has in him this week, after the loss in Hilton Head. How will he respond? I like his chances, he’s shown week in and week out that he’s one of the most consistent players in the world. I’ll be starting him this week, and backing him up with Charley Hoffman on the bench who should be fresh with a week off last week.
The B group is stacked with great options and provides some difficult decisions. Jeff Overton who hasn’t had a great year thus far with only one top 10 to speak of, has posted a 2nd and a T9 in his last two starts in New Orleans. Justin Rose leads the TOUR in greens in regulation and has posted three top 10s this year. Hasn’t tee’d it up since his T11 at the Masters, but could be poised for a great week in New Orleans.
I normally wouldn’t pick, let alone start, the previous week’s winner, but it’s hard not to with how Brandt Snedeker played at Harbour Town. A closing round 64 and taking down Luke Donald in a 3-hole playoff was quite impressive. I’ll back him up with Chris Couchs who’s having another solid year with three top 10s on the young season.
