With one round of the Playoffs in the books, the top 100 move on to my hometown and tee it up at the TPC Boston for the Deutsche Bank Championship. The scoring average for the TPC Boston comes in just under 70, so look for more low scores again this year, as the course will probably still be somewhat soft due to the soaking rains that Irene brought in over the weekend. In 2010 Charley Hoffman showed how well the course can in fact be scored on by posting a closing round 62 and left the competition in the dust with a five shot margin of victory over runner-ups Geoff Ogilvy, Luke Donald, and Jason Day.

Last week Luke Donald had an “off” week. If you could call a T18 an “off week” that is. But a pair of 66s to close the 54-hole event shouldn’t be overlooked. Donald took co-runner-up honors at the DBC last year with a -17 total, so he obviously knows how to score on the TPC Boston. I’m giving him the start this week over Nick Watney, who I also think will have a good week. Even though Watney lost his spot atop the FedEx Cup rankings last week he’s still coming off of a couple of great showings in his last two events (T12 PGA Championship, T10 Barclays). If his putter gets hot, look for him to go very low on the scoreable course.
A month ago if you told me I’d be picking Vijay Singh for anything I would have thought you were crazy. What has the 48 year old done to make me change my mind? How about a T4 at the Wyndham Championship and a T3 last week at The Barclays? Add to that, that he’s the only two-time winner of the DBC at the TPC Boston, I like his chances for a strong showing again this week. Webb Simpson had me a little worried early on last week, but a closing round 63 to finish T10 let me breath a sigh of relief. Simpson and Singh get the starting nods for the B group this week.
For the C group I’m again picking the pair of Aussies. Jason Day continues his strong season, and even took co-runner-up honors here as well last year. Adam Scott is a solid backup and has performed great at the TPC Boston, with a win in 2003 and a T5 last year. If he has the long putter rolling again this week, he’ll be a factor.
Starting Foursome: Luke Donald, Webb Simpson, Vijay Singh, Jason Day
On the bench: Nick Watney, Bill Haas, Justin Rose, Adam Scott
