Throughout the 2011 PGA TOUR season I regularly provided my predictions and analysis for fellow Fantasy Golf fanatics. Sometimes I fared quite well, others not so much. Picking winners isn’t as easy as you would think, as you are picking players out of a field of 150 and many factors come in to play. Still I managed to pick 11 winners, as well as many other runner-ups and top 10s to go along with it. For me, playing Fantasy Golf just gives me yet another reason to follow what’s happening on TOUR. That extra added incentive of competition among others from week to week, gives me added interest. Previously, all of the leagues I’ve played in, there was nothing at stake to even play for. Just bragging rights. Well that will change for the 2012 Fantasy Golf season. New England Golf Monthly is now creating its own Fantasy Golf league through Yahoo!, and thanks to our many fantastic sponsors there will be a number of prizes up for grabs that will be sure to help keep you interested and paying attention to what’s happening on TOUR.
For those of you who are new to Fantasy Golf here’s a bit of a primer: Each week you choose four starters to start the tournament on Thursday, and four bench players to switch out as starters for the remainder of the rounds. Yahoo! splits these up in to three groups. You choose one starter from the “A” group, two from the “B” group, and one starter from the “C” group, with the same number of players for your bench from each group. You are also only allotted 10 starts per player, per season, which can add some complexity and overall strategy. The season gets underway at the Sony Open in Hawaii in January and wraps up at the TOUR Championship in September. There are three segments to the Fantasy Golf season which are broken down to Winter, Spring, and Summer. Within each league there are segment winners and then an overall season winner.
For our NEGM league there will be prizes for each segment, as well as a grand prize awarded to the winner of the overall season. So now there is plenty of incentive to sign up and play! As the season gets closer, more details of the league and prizes will be available at mynegm.com/fantasygolf. My weekly picks and analysis will also be available and featured on the site as well.
