Established in 1959, Chemawa Golf Course has grown from a small, nine hole course into the unique 18 hole layout that it is today. Located in N. Attleboro, MA (near the Emerald Square Mall), it has long been a favorite among female golfers. So what is it about this course that ladies like so much? Most noticeable is the exquisitely maintained, detailed grounds that create incredible ambience… gorgeous floral plantings, meandering brooks, water fountains, birdhouses on every fairway that denote the 150- yardage marker. Add to that the friendly, welcoming staff, which enhances the comfortable, inviting feel that truly makes playing golf here a pleasant “walk in the park” experience.
This player-friendly course measures a manageable 4,368 yards from the forward tees with a slope/rating of 64.6/109. Although short in distance, it’s not without its challenges. There are few surprises on the flat, compact, front nine. The tight, parallel fairways demand accuracy and alertness to errant shots of golfers on adjacent holes. Holes # 3-6 open up across the road, which make for a nice change of pace. The front nine consists of mostly par-4s, one par-5 (340 yards), and one par-3 (117 yards).
The fun begins with the par-3 eleventh hole, a severe uphill blind tee shot to a pint-size green! This hole introduces you to the “upper level”…the more rolling, spacious, scenic back nine, featuring a greater variety of holes, more water hazards and doglegs to navigate, and varying elevation changes that will challenge your game. Most memorable is the beautiful but visually intimidating severe downhill 16th hole featuring a pint-size green guarded by bunkers and water in front and back. The culminating 18th hole, a par-5, is the longest and most challenging hole for ladies (400 yards). As it meanders downhill and left, beware of the hidden brook that intersects the fairway. Chemawa is a well-manicured, fun course to play. You’ll love the large, contoured, undulating greens which are receptive and roll true. As for the 19th hole, their clubhouse serves great food and outside dining with a great view. www.chemawagolf.com
