Standing on Any Tee Box Expecting to Make Par

Posted in Golf Writers Column by on August 11th, 2010

The big boys are playing the PGA Championship this week at Whistling Straits, which looks more like a haunted hayride circuit than any golf course I’ve ever seen, so let’s take the title for what it is. I’ve reached the point in the 2010 New England Golf Challenge where I can stand on any tee I’ve played this year and see myself making par. I have started to scratch the surface of seeing angles, understanding the shots I need to hit, accepting what I can and can’t do on a given hole then giving it my best shot. Obviously I can’t do it 18 times yet, but the thought process is coming along and the swing is as consistent as it has ever been.

Full disclosure: I still haven’t broken 80, but the game is getting there. More fairways and greens are hit every round, the big numbers are disappearing, but the intricacies of scoring are still working their way into my game.

I found a few go to shots off the tee, some very solid yardages to play from, and learned a trick or two around the greens to keep the bogey man at bay.

We’re getting into the back nine of the New England golf season and I’m sure many of you haven’t reached all your goals. I know my short game has kept me from my loftiest goals, but I know they are within reach now and that confidence has been hard earned.

I’ll be taking the game on the road again this month, with a few marathon sessions down south. The site will be updated, hopefully with some good news in the coming weeks. Be sure to pass along your breakthroughs as well.
