The 2010 New England Golf Challenge has reached the halfway point. Through six months I am proud to announce a 12 shot decrease in my handicap from 25 to 13, new low 18 hole scores coming almost weekly, and more sub 40 nine hole scores than I can count. Nearly every goal I set for myself as been met and often times exceeded.
I feel pretty secure in my game, what I can and cannot do on the golf course right now, so it’s time to test myself in a new arena. This Friday my competitive career begins in the RIGA Public Links at Triggs Memorial in Providence, then Saturday at Cranston Country Club. This RIGA major attracts a strong field of local amateurs, and should present a perfect picture of the progress I’ve made this season.
My only competitive golf experience is my Monday night golf league at Triggs, where I’m sitting in the middle of the pack with a .500 record and an 8.5 handicap. I don’t really know what to expect, other than a little more pressure and a few club choice changes around Triggs on Friday. While at the Travelers this week I heard Rickie Fowler tell us in the press room that he will not lay up on the drivable par 4 15th, I can tell you now that I will be laying up on the long par 5 15th at Triggs if the wind is in my face. Pride be damned I am not putting a 10 on my card.
My mynegm.com page will be updated throughout the tournament, look for scorecards, play-by-play and photos from the event.
