How to cure the shanks

Posted in Golf Instruction by on June 2nd, 2011

Here is your drill:

  • With a wedge, short or mid iron, set-up as you normally would and then back up away from the ball 2-3 inches.  Setting the ball out towards the toe of the club.
  • With small swings or pitch shots hit shots off the toe of the club
  • Do this several times until you start to feel and extension out towards the ball on the downswing
  • Gradually take bigger swings using the same club until you feel the center of the clubface is making contact with the ball

A shank is cased by hitting the ball on the hosel of the club.  Too close to the heel.  Often times you must exaggerate something repetitively or do the opposite of what you are doing to break a bad habit.  So set the ball up out towards the to and hit small shots on the toe of the club.  This will promote extension through the ball and that in to out swing path that we all here so much about.
