New England gets two top ten finishes at Southern Dunes
Joe Affrunti(-15) took a couple of weeks off of the Hooters Pro Tour for Q-school and is back this week trying to re-gain the lead on the money list before he left. Affrunti made just one bogey this week as he finished his mission today with a bogey free round of 66(-6) giving him a 4 shot win over a three players that were tied for second place including James Vargas(-11) who also carded a 66 today.
Fifth place belongs to Rob Oppenheim(-10) who sat at +1 after ten holes before making birdie on 5 of his next 6 holes to finish with a 68(-4) today and a top 5 finish. The Andover native had a solid week as he comes off gaining full status on the Nationwide Tour a couple of weeks ago.
"Mr. Smoothie", Jim Renner(-8) once again consistent and steady with yet another top ten finish this week with rounds of 71-68-69. Despite making three bogey's today, Renner was able to recover with six birdies. The Plainville native had a couple of hiccups with a double bogey in each of his first two rounds and off set yesterdays with an eagle 3 on the second hole. Jon Curran and John Elliot tied for 27th with 9 other players at -3. Elliot posted a double bogey on the 17th hole costing him 12 slots.
Six New England players struggled with the nearly 7300 yard track this week and missed the cut that was -1. Matt Parziale (71-73) was sitting pretty at -2 before posting a triple bogey 7 on his 17th hole (8th hole) knocking him out of the final round as the cut line was -1. Parziale has missed the last three cuts. Quincy's Michael Welch (75-78) sitting in the 8 spot on the money list will not be adding to his kitty as he missed the cut as well. Last week Travis Hampshire went wire to wire that moved him into the second slot on the money list is also on the outside looking in as he withdrew from competition.
