4th Annual $1 Million Hole-In-One Shootout Sept. 11-13

By: Greg Sampson on 09/09/09 12:16 PM

Golf for $1 Million September 11-13EASTON, Mass - The My Brother's Keeper $1 Million Hole-In-One Shootout is scheduled for Sept. 11 - 13 at Golf Country, Route 138, South Easton.  Sponsored by WEEI 103.7 FM, the Shootout, now in its fourth year, is an innovative golf fundraising event where participants have the opportunity to win $1 Million as well as $5,000 in consolation prizes for as little as $10.

"The Shootout is all about families:  those that come, participate and have some fun, and those we can better serve with the funds raised," said Erich Miller, Executive Director of My Brother's Keeper.  "Children can watch Mom or Dad compete for the $1 Million Prize as well as spend time together playing miniature golf, at the batting cages or food court."

All proceeds from the event go to support My Brother's Keeper, a Christian non-profit organization that provides free furniture and food to families in need throughout Southeastern Massachusetts.  Last year nearly $50,000 was raised.

The need for furniture amongst the families My Brother's Keeper serves has grown nearly 100 percent over the past 18 months along with a 15 percent increase in food deliveries.

The Shootout gets underway at Golf Country, Route 138, South Easton with the first qualifying round on Friday, Sept. 11, from 3:00 pm to 7:00 pm and continues Saturday, Sept. 12 from 11:00 am to 7:00 pm. The semi-finals and finals are on Sunday, Sept. 13 with Semi-finals at 9:00 am at Golf Country and Finals at 1:00 pm at Easton Country Club. (See sidebar for full schedule details.)

How The "Shootout" Works:

Qualifying Round at Golf Country, South Easton

Friday, Sept. 11 from 3 pm - 7 pm
Saturday, Sept. 12 from 11 am - 7 pm

Participants purchase buckets of golf balls - $10 for a bucket of 12 balls or $20 for a bucket of 25 balls - and try to hit into a 6-foot circle 125 yards from the tee.  Each ball hit inside the circle means one shot in the semi-finals. Anyone who makes a hole-in-one during the qualifying round automatically advances to the Finals.

Semi-Finals at Golf Country, South Easton
Sunday, Sept. 13 at 9 am

All semi-finalists shoot for the pin. The 25 contestants closest to the pin advance to the Finals.

Finals at Easton Country Club; Sunday, Sept. 13 at 1pm

Each of the 25 Finalists gets one chance to win $1 Million by sinking a hole-in-one on a 165-yard practice hole

$5,000 Bonus Prizes:  If no one sinks a hole-in-one during the Finals, the contestant closest to the pin wins $2,500.  The contestant with the second closest ball wins $1,500 and the third closest will receive $1,000.  Remaining finalists are eligible for the consolation raffle which includes Red Sox tickets.

There is no entry fee to the event and families and friends are encouraged to come and enjoy the event.  All participants must be 18 years of age or older.  Participants may bring their own clubs or use clubs that will be available.  The event is rain or shine.  The Tee boxes are covered.

Unique Mission of My Brother's Keeper

Families, retirees, and students gather daily at My Brother's Keeper in North Easton, Mass., in their efforts to serve families in Southeastern Mass.  While there are many organizations that attend to the very important work of providing food to families, My Brother's Keeper not only provides food, they provide furniture free of charge.

"We have found that many families in need may have some furniture, but very often they don't have beds and all the family may be sleeping on mattresses on the floor," said Erich Miller, Executive Director of My Brother's Keeper.  "No one should ever have to sleep on the floor.  It is amazing what joy a bed can bring to someone, especially a child."

My Brother's Keeper was founded in 1988 by a husband and wife in the basement of their home.  Jim and Terry Orcutt were inspired by a movie they viewed on challenges faced by a homeless, single mother.  They took action and began the work that now has made more than 90,000 deliveries to families in need with the assistance of more than 2,000 volunteers.

"While it is hard for most us to imagine what it is to be homeless, try to imagine it for a minute," said Jim Orcutt, founder of My Brother's Keeper.  "Imagine the joy you would feel when you are finally able to get an apartment.  Then imagine walking into that apartment with your children and you have no furniture or food to make that apartment a home.  Whether their homelessness resulted from unemployment, illness, or any number of reasons, it's devastating not to be able to provide for your family.   It's our mission, all of us at My Brother's Keeper, to serve families, during this very difficult time, with dignity and respect as we try to restore their hope."

My Brother's Keeper provides all the essential furniture a family may need - refrigerators, beds, dressers, living room furniture, kitchen sets, and cribs - as well as important household items like dishes, pots and pans, sheets, towels, and small electrical appliances, which are obtained through a combination of residential and commercial donations.

Food is also an important part of My Brother's Keeper's mission.  The average retail delivery of nonperishable canned goods and a variety of fresh food is valued at $110.  Through significant in-kind donations, their average cost per food delivery is $16. No costs are ever passed along to recipients.

My Brother's Keeper also conducts an extensive Christmas program serving 2,000 families each year in 60 communities between Boston, Fall River, and Cape Cod.
