When you think of Foxwood's and the Mashantucket Pequot Indians what comes to mind is the incredible facility built like the city of OZ climbing out of the forest of North Stonington Connecticut. Foxwood's, the worlds largest resort casino, host some of the greatest entertainment and celebrity events nationwide. It has quite frankly become one of the most popular resort facilities in the country. What has made Foxwood's so successful is its universal marketability to all who would like to come and enjoy not only gaming, but also world class accommodations and some of the finest restaurants, shows, shopping, and spa's anywhere.

In March of 1993 the Mashantucket Tribe purchased nearly 1000 acres of land across the street from the Foxwood's Casino from the Long River Council of the Boy Scouts for the Lake of Isles Golf Facility. In the early 1990's renowned golf course architect Rees Jones began planning the resort golf facilities at Lake of Isles. Construction began in 2001 and two world-class 18-hole golf courses were opened in the spring of 2005. The North Course, which is the public access resort course, and the South Course, which is the private course. Since it's opening Lake of Isles has been named by Golf Magazine as one of the top ten new golf courses in America you can play, and #7 on the Best New Upscale Public Courses by Golf Digest for 2006. The golf facility is world class and one of the finest new golf facilities ever built in New England.

The rolling landscape, wrapped around a ninety-acre pristine lake offered Rees Jones a dramatic pallet to design this great facility. Mature hardwoods and steep elevation changes abound throughout the property. The natural beauty and majestic vistas from many tee's and greens make this course one of the most picturesque golf facilities you will play anywhere. Lake of Isles is truly a New England golf treasure.

We played the North Course, which is the resort course at Lake of Isles. The course plays 7252 yards from the back tee's, which I would not recommend you play unless you can carry your drives over 240 yards. The gold tee's are played at 6717 yards rated 72.8 with a slope of 135 and offer a much more playable round for the average low to mid handicapper. The front nine starts you out with a Par five at 575 yards, the number one handicap hole out of the shoot. You will need a good drive to carry over 235 yards to clear the hazard to the fairway. There will be no going for the green in two here, which is well protected by bunkers.

The second hole is a 200 + yard par three with a steep elevation change and full carry over water. Take one less club at least. The third is a short par four at 334 yards, hit your 3 wood or three iron and you will have a wedge in for a birdie. The par 4 fourth is the number three handicap hole on the course, it plays at 428 yards uphill into an S shaped fairway, a small green made the approach difficult with a back right pin tucked near a large trap. The fifth is a hard dogleg right par 5 at 481 yards, play your drive over the left hand fairway bunker at 223 yards, your downhill roll will take you inside of 200 yards for your approach shot into the green.

The 6th hole is a 399-yard par four; again you must carry the hazard to the fairway here as well. The green is tucked well up on the left protected by a left side bunker. The par three seventh plays at 196 yards with full carry over another hazard. The 8th hole is a short par 4 at 349 yards followed by the 9th another par four at 435 yards, a dogleg right. You will need to get your drive out to at least 260 yards to have a look at this green.

The back nine starts you out again with a full carry drive over 240 yards to clear the hazard to be in position to get on in two on this 416-yard par 4. It's a classic downhill drive to a steep uphill approach to the green. The 11th, a par three at 178 yards, is pretty straightforward. The 12th a par five at 507 yards is a for sure birdie hole, and that is why it is the number 18 handicap hole. The 13th, a par four at 357 yards, plays a little more difficult with a tiny green surrounded by bunkers,

The 14th, another par four at 415 yards is a slight dogleg again to the right. The 15th again begins the real fun with a par five at 557 yards. Even a good drive of 275 yards or more requires a short lay up in front of the hazard that protects the green. Play it by the book and accept par as a good score here. The 16th is a straightaway par three at 181 yards and a feel good hole.

You are now coming into probably the two toughest finishing holes on any golf course in New England. The 17th is a par four at 375 yards. From a very elevated tee box you will look out over 265 yards of water and hazard to get to the fairway. This hole will frequently play into the wind. If you can carry the 265 yards you will be in great shape, if not, join the majority of players in the drop area just over the water, a great golf hole, and yes I cleared it! Now comes the 18th,the courses #2 handicap hole that I think should be the #1. At 442 yards this par 4 is one of the toughest you will play anywhere. It is a full carry drive of 250 + into the wind again to land on this narrow fairway. (And no I did not make this one), So now if you accomplish that let's see if you can hit a low iron into 30 yard long green in the middle of a hazard all carry. Good luck here, a par on this hole is like an eagle on a par five. What a great finishing golf hole.

Lake of Isles Golf Club is truly one of the finest new golf facilities built in our region. The dramatic design, layout, and overall condition of this course ranks with the best of the best. This course will challenge your golf skills and make you pay attention to all aspects of your game. It is a course that you will want to come back and play again and again. Green fee's range from $95.00 to $145.00 weekdays to $125.00 to $195.00 weekends and tee times are a must. This course gets a special Phantom Rating of 100+ out of 100 the best track played by the phantom in New England.
