Crystal Lake Golf Club
Crystal Lake Golf Club is located just 20 minutes from Providence in one of the most picturesque regions of the state Rhode Island. The rolling hills tall pines and pristine lakes in North West Rhode Island have always been a great family destination for day outings, camping and for many of us a great meal at Wrights Farm. The beauty of this region makes it a wonderful location for a golf course.

Crystal Lake was built in 2003 and designed by golf course architect Howard Maurer. This beautiful lakeside designed course winds through rolling hills with dramatic tee to green elevation changes and offers player spectacular views from many holes. The layout and feel of the course is similar to many of the great courses throughout Northern New England in New Hampshire and Vermont. While just a short ride from both Providence Rhode Island, and Worcester Massachusetts Crystal Lake offers golfers a great getaway for a day of great golf at an excellent facility.
Crystal Lake is par 71 eighteen-hole course at 6349 yards rated 70 with a slope of 120. The layout makes this course a bit more challenging than most courses with a slope of 120. The Rolling hills steep elevation changes and narrow fairways on many holes make you use all the clubs in the bag. In every sense this course is all about management and shot placement. The design of Crystal Lake will keep you thinking and it becomes apparent quickly if you are going to score here you must pay attention.
The front nine starts you out with a straight away par four at 362 yards; this is your feel good hole for the front. The second hole is a par three at 185 yards with a dramatic elevation change from tee to green heavily bunkered on the right and left. side of the green. Hit at least two clubs less depending on the wind. The 3rd and 4th holes are par fours both at around 400 yards both require well-placed tee shots to be in a position for a birdie. The 5th hole a 540-yard severe dogleg par 5 begins the real fun. Tee shots that are cutting the corner must carry a vast waste area and land on a narrow fairway to have any chance to get home in two. Even if you hit that nice fade into the fairway the second shot into an elevated green protected by bunkers and waste on the left will have to be precise. The 6th another dog leg this time left a par five at only 460 yards is all about position. You run out of fairway at 250 yards so a three wood is the choice here. If you hit the perfect shot then your next shot in will have to be a clean 200+ shot to a well-protected green. The 7th is a monster 445-yard par 4 usually into the wind with water just right of a well-protected green. The 8th is a par three at 192 yards uphill followed by a short 9th hole at 308 yards, there is much trouble here so think 3 iron wedge, forget about driving this green play it by the book.
The back nine once again starts you out with a par four at 422 yards, even though this hole has length its feel good hole with a strong downhill fairway toward the green. Here is where you can brag about that 350-yard drive. The 11th is a long par three at 205 yards. The hole has at least 150 ft. elevation change from tee to a small green surrounded by trees. On the next two holes the 12th and the 13th again it's all about course management. Both are short par fours at just over 300 yards but do not be tempted, hit the three wood or three iron, be disciplined. On the 14th you will find the last par five and again position is everything if you want birdie here. The small green is tucked away along side the lake with plenty of trouble long. The 15th is the only short par three at 160 yards on this track so enjoy. The 16th is a short par four at 340 yards but watch out for well-placed bunkers or your looking at a short bogie. The 17th hole is a long par four at 415 yards that plays uphill off the tee with a very tricky green. You finish up on the most picturesque hole on the golf course a 378-yard par four sharp dogleg left along side the lake. If you have a hard draw in the bag use it here. You will need a well-placed shot over water to have a chance for a finishing birdie, what a great golf hole for a finishing 18th.
Overall Crystal Lake is a fresh approach to new golf courses design in the New England region. The challenging layout over rolling hills along side a beautiful lake make it one of the most scenic golf courses I have ever played. The course condition was excellent and fairways and greens were in great shape. Owners Kevin and Cindy Bliss have created a great golf facility that will be a long-standing favorite throughout the region. A Phantom Rating of 95 out of 100. A Phantom must play course.
