Townsend Ridge Country Club might not measure up to Augusta National in terms of total golf experience, but the drive into the course conjures images of Magnolia Lane(without the magnolias).
I’ve been told that access to the famedMagnolia LaneinAugustais off an incongruous commercial strip of highway that provides no clue that one of golf’s Meccas – the famed, pristine Augusta National course, lies just past the nondescript roadway. A first-time visitor to Townsend Ridge experiences a similar contrast.
The center of Townsend is located on Route 13, about six miles north ofFitchburgand about four miles south of theNew Hampshireborder. To find Townsend Ridge (which is not prominently marked), turn onto Route 119 West and look for a Citgo Station. A left turn onScales Avenueleads you into an industrial park which provides no clue that a golf course is anywhere nearby.
But don’t recalculate your GPS. If you keep driving past the greenhouses, tractor-trailers, and corrugated metal buildings, you’ll soon encounter stately brick pillars that beckon you onto a winding, wooded drive that affords vistas of the lush landscape of the course and the stately clubhouse. You have arrived at Townsend Ridge.
