WENTWORTH HILLS GOLF CLUB…A Lady's Perspective

Posted in Golf Course Reviews by on August 25th, 2011

Wentworth Hills Golf Club          The recently reopened Wentworth Hills G.C., in Plainville,MA, is an off-the-beaten-path gem full of surprise vistas starting with the drive in. Nestled within a wooded residential setting, finding the course can be tricky, especially if you enter via Cumberland’s Reservoir Rd.  The scenic adventure you’ll experience as you drive around the majestic reservoir is a great beginning to what awaits you at Wentworth Hills. The gorgeous Tudor designed clubhouse surrounded by colorful plantings, wraparound deck, friendly professional staff, and premium course conditions, offers a private-club experience.

This environmentally managed course of 18 unique holes, actually straddles two states with 13 holes in MA and 5 holes in RI.  Designed by Howard Maurer, it reflects his philosophy of “challenging the golfer while rewarding the eye”.  This track offers design variety, memorability, risk-reward options and tranquility as you play through the rolling landscape, tree-lined fairways, dramatic elevations changes, open meadows, around environmental wetlands and large pond with panoramic views.

From the forward tees, the course is a manageable 4,731-yards with a course/slope rating of 68.8/116. Distance advantage, few forced carries and reachable par-3s make it enjoyable and player-friendly for ladies, yet it’s not without its challenges. Risk-and-reward shots are a choice if you want to take them, but escape routes from hazards with safe landing areas are available if you have prior knowledge of the course layout. The velvet bent grass greens are receptive and consistent with all putts.  Wentworth Hills

Distinct differences between the front and back nine holes give you the feel you’re playing an entirely different course. If you’re the type of person who likes to tackle the tough holes first then cruise the back nine, you’ll love this course! The “eye-appealing” front nine is more demanding as far as shot placement, because of the tighter sloping fairways, elevation changes, doglegs and environmental wetlands you need to maneuver. The back nine features wider fairways with basically straight, up-and-down shots. Discovery…the back nine holes use to be the front nine!

Know of any public courses that offer complimentary chilled bottled water on several holes and clean your clubs after playing the 18th hole?  Wentworth does. Treat yourself to a “private club” experience…go play Wentworth Hills.
