Fourth annual Just Fore the Kids Jimmy Fund Golf Tournament
The Chupinski family, of Marlborough, Mass., created Just Fore the Kids, a Jimmy Fund Golf tournament to raise funds for patient activities at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute’s Jimmy Fund Clinic. The Jimmy Fund Clinic is one of the world’s premier centers for pediatric cancer research and treatment. The tournament will take place on Friday, Aug. 12, at Juniper Hill Golf Course in Northboro, Mass.
Chip and his wife, had one reason for starting this tournament – their daughter Samantha (Chupinski) Roberts. In 2005, at the age of 15, she was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s Lymphoma. Samantha’s year-long treatment included 12 weeks of chemotherapy and three weeks of radiation. As a result of her treatment, Samantha missed many regular high school activities, including regular classes and her favorite sport, lacrosse.
Although Samantha experienced difficult times, spending time with other teenage patients at the Jimmy Fund Clinic made it a little easier. Through the clinic, Samantha went on many trips with her new friends who were going through similar experiences. She enjoyed all of these trips, but particularly a trip to see the Red Sox at spring training in Ft. Myers, Fla.
Near the end of her treatment, Samantha insisted that her family needed to have a fundraiser for the Jimmy Fund. It started off with cookouts at the Chupinski residence, in which their first year raised $5,000. The funds raised through the cookout supported patient activities at the Jimmy Fund Clinic and made another trip to Red Sox spring training for kids at the clinic possible. The annual Just Fore the Kids golf tournament was soon created through the Jimmy Fund Golf Program and received overwhelming support from the Marlborough community.
Each year the tournament brings family, friends, and co-workers out for a great day of golf, while always remembering it is for a good cause. This year, the Chupinskis expect between 80 – 140 golfers to participate, and have a fundraising goal of $16,000. Over the past three years, Just Fore the Kids has raised more than $46,000 for patient activities at Dana-Farber’s Jimmy Fund Clinic.
The Jimmy Fund Golf Program is one of the oldest and largest charity golf programs in the country. Now in its 29th year, The Jimmy Fund Golf Program has raised more than $80 million for life-saving cancer research and treatment for adults and children at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute.
