PALM BEACH GARDENS, Fla. – David McAndrew of Barrington, R.I., birdied his first four holes and rolled to his first professional victory Monday by winning a Fuzion/Minor League Golf Tour event on the Haig course at PGA National.
At 65, McAndrew won by two strokes over Mike Adamson of Stuart, who shot 67, second among 38 starters. After his fast start, McAndrew bogeyed the par-3 fifth hole, then finished with birdies at Nos. 7, 9, 13 and 17. He earned $800 from the $4,610 purse.
In the senior division for players 47 and older, Hector Zapata of Weston ended a three-game winning streak by Warren Jurkowitz of Avenrura. Zapata beat Victor Leoni of Miami in a playoff with a three-foot birdie putt at the par-5 first hole after they tied at two under par 70. Each made four birdies and two bogeys in regulation. Zapata had one previous MLGT victory, on July 26, 2007/
Jurkowitz had won all three events played last week at the start of the new seniors’ flight. Jurkowitz shot 73 Monday to tie for third among six entries.
The MLGT has two more tournaments this week, both in Palm Beach County and each with a senior division: Tuesday, Links at Madison Green, Royal Palm Beach, and Thursday, Abacoa GC, Jupiter. For information and entry, go to www.minorleaguegolf.com.
