Samoset Resort on the Ocean

Posted in Golf Travel by on August 1st, 2010

Coastal Highway 1 from either direction to Rockport Maine is a great scenic ride, but don’t delay your arrival to Samoset. You won’t want to miss a magical moment at this beautiful retreat. The golf course, one of the top in America, takes advantage of its coastal position with water views from most holes. If the ocean vistas aren’t enough to take your breath away, the flowers will be. Greg Grennert, superintendent gets the highest award for horticulture on and off the course with floral delights across the entire resort property. The signature hole is the par 5 number 4 which is outlined by the ocean on the left and past the green beside the Rockland Breakwater and lighthouse. The next uphill par 3 has a shallow green with a possible gallery of poolside onlookers. The back nine begins with a different water view with a peninsula green behind a fountain lake on 10 and more fountains and woods through 13.  Number 14 resumes the ocean views and all lead back to one of the most difficult finishing holes anywhere as water, marsh, bunkers and trees abound on 18. Samoset is one of the most visually inspiring courses to play.

The amazing new zero entry pool area is spacious with comfy furniture, and soft music, overlooking the ocean. Sipping a signature cocktail, from the splash bar while watching a vast variety of vessels floating in the Penobscot Bay, will calm the most alpha of personalities. After the much loved seafood of coastal Maine, the steak gorgonzola salad hits the spot. GM Connie Russell has an attention for detail, making constant improvements to this 100 year old landmark with his excellent staff. In the works are plans for an expansive spa.

Mix a grand piano with an ocean view, a gourmet menu and you will enjoy dining perfection at Marcel’s restaurant. Morel mushrooms paired with fresh halibut is only an example of the delectable choices. More casual fare at the adjacent Breakwater Café offers the same striking view. Walk off the calories on the breakwater pathway, a two mile trek across boulders to the lighthouse over the bay for a totally different perspective on land and sea. All rooms have a balcony with a view or choose the dramatic new Flume Cottage, a two-bedroom hideaway bungalow at the ocean’s edge, just off the 15th fairway. Whether golfer, family or conference planner, go to www.samosetresort.com if you are looking for peace on earth.
