Golf in the Land of the Tycoons
Acadia, one of our nation’s most beautiful national parks, is located on Mt. Desert Island Maine. Wealthy families with names like the Rockefeller and Carnegie have made the pilgrimage to this island since the 18th century to sail their yachts off the rockbound coast and construct mansions in the middle of the dense forests. And they played golf. Grindstone and Causeway are two superb nine hole courses located in the area of Bar Harbor. Grindstone is located in the town of Winter Harbor and was founded in 1891. Each of the nine holes has water views and generous fairways. The course is only 3095 yards from the back tees, but the small greens call for accurate approach shots. Winter Harbor is a very small town, but the locals are proud of their little course in the wilds and are very friendly to tourists. Call 207 963-7760 for information. At $25.00 green fees for nine holes you will never find a better deal. — » Read More: Golf in the Land of the Tycoons
Golf The High Sierra
Standing on the 17th tee at Edgewood Tahoe Golf Course, you get a feel for all of the outdoor activities that encompass the Lake Tahoe/Reno region. There's the boaters docking alongside the beach near the 17th fairway, there's the hiking and biking trails to the east, the spectacular hotel/casinos to the south, and the still snow-capped ski mountains to the north and west. All within an hour's drive of each other. — » Read More: Golf The High Sierra
Samoset Resort on the Ocean
Coastal Highway 1 from either direction to Rockport Maine is a great scenic ride, but don’t delay your arrival to Samoset. You won’t want to miss a magical moment at this beautiful retreat. The golf course, one of the top in America, takes advantage of its coastal position with water views from most holes. If the ocean vistas aren’t enough to take your breath away, the flowers will be. Greg Grennert, superintendent gets the highest award for horticulture on and off the course with floral delights across the entire resort property. The signature hole is the par 5 number 4 which is outlined by the ocean on the left and past the green beside the Rockland Breakwater and lighthouse. The next uphill par 3 has a shallow green with a possible gallery of poolside onlookers. The back nine begins with a different water view with a peninsula green behind a fountain lake on 10 and more fountains and woods through 13. Number 14 resumes the ocean views and all lead back to one of the most difficult finishing holes anywhere as water, marsh, bunkers and trees abound on 18. Samoset is one of the most visually inspiring courses to play. — » Read More: Samoset Resort on the Ocean
Williamsburg a Winner
The Kingsmill Resort and Spa in Williamsburg, Virginia is truly the king of resorts. The River Course is a favorite of many LPGA and PGA players. Pete Dye’s design has several tunnels connecting the holes, but don’t get tunnel vision, because you will miss the incredible beauty of this green canvas, splattered with red cardinals, bluebirds, and pink azaleas. Stately brick homes watch over some fairways, while the waterways are guarded by loggerheads and snakes making wakes. A hillside cannon above the river on 16, is a bold reminder of the rich regional history. It leads to the signature hole 17, marking Burwell’s landing since 1775, where the British were held off and the confederates later occupied. — » Read More: Williamsburg a Winner

The Oregon Trail
Often praised higher than Pebble Beach at half the price, Bandon Dunes’ ocean link courses provide a taste of Scotland without passports. Every course is a rigorous walk enriched with natural dune bunkers carved by God and gorgeous yellow gorse, of course, imported over a century ago from Scotland. Bring your bump and run game as the difference from fairway to green grass is very subtle. Bring too, your camera for some of the best ocean golf views. Thanks to Freeman Theriault, acclaimed with 46 holes in one and John Gunby, PGA Pro, for sharing their Bandon Dunes award trip, and check marking our bucket lists. — » Read More: The Oregon Trail

Byron Kalies » Golf in Wales
Golf in Wales will not begin and end with the 2010 Ryder Cup. There are other courses in Wales apart from Celtic Manor. There are also golfers in Wales not called Ian Woosnam. For a country the size of 8,000 square miles (smaller than all American states apart from Connecticut, Delaware and Rhode Island), and a population of just under 3 million, there are 176 golf courses. This is perfectly adequate for our needs - after all, we’re not Scotland are we? — » Read More: Byron Kalies » Golf in Wales
