Adams and Fitzpatrick Win In Style

PLANTATION, Fla. – Adam Adams of Coconut Creek holed a bunker shot for an eagle and Jim Fitzpatrick of Stratford, Conn., sank a 29-foot birdie putt from the fringe for a pair of sudden victories Wednesday in Fuzion Minor League Golf Tour action at Jacaranda Golf Club.

Moments after Warren Jurkowitz of Aventura chipped to within a foot for an easy birdie at the par-5 ninth hole on the East course, Adams slam-dunked his shot from a bunker from off the left front of the green.

The outcome in the senior division shootout gave Adams a $2,500 bonus to pay his entry fee into qualifying for the Champions Tour later this year. He had led Jurkowitz by $103.33 heading into the winner-take-all finale and earned an additional $250 Wednesday for a total of $2,578.35. Jurkowitz finished with $2,225.01. Each had won four times in 10 senior events over the past three weeks. In Wednesday’s play, they matched three under par 68s, tied for fifth overall among 42 starters, then halved the first playoff hole, the par-4 first.

Fitzpatrick won the open division when he birdied the par-3 third hole from the left fringe. He was among four players tied at 67. After they all made par-4s at the first hole, Jeff Ivall of Palm Beach Gardens was eliminated with bogey-5 at the second. Then just before Fitzpatrick made his winning birdie at the third, Guy Boros, a former PGA Tour winner from Pompano Beach, missed a 35-foot birdie putt and Brenton Flynn of Nashville, Tenn., chipped to within three feet and was waiting to attempt his par putt.

In regulation, Fitzpatrick birdied seven of his first 11 holes, then bogeyed three times coming home. He earned $900 from the $5,103 purse. It was his fifth MLGT title.

The MLGT plays three 18-hole tournaments next week, all in Palm Beach County: Monday, Jupiter CC; Wednesday, Fountains CC-West; and Thursday, Links @ Madison Green. For information and entry, go to www.minorleaguegolf.com.
