June 9 — With the Curtis Cup golf matches set to tee off Friday, four members of the U.S. team got in a little practice by qualifying for the 2010 U.S. Women’s Open.
Phenom. Alexis Thompson, grabbed medalist honors at a Florida sectional qualifier. The 15-year-old phenom, who will turn pro immediately following the Curtis Cup, will make her fourth straight appearance at the Open championship next month at Oakmont Country Club in Pennsylvania.
The 2008 U.S. Girls Junior champ, Thompson was the youngest ever to qualify for a U.S. Women’s Open when she did so in 2007 at age 12.
That’s 12, folks.
Kimberly Kim was another 2010 Curtis Cupper who tuned up nicely when she was medalist at a Colorado qualifier. Kim will be playing in her fifth consecutive Open. In case you weren’t feeling quite old enough, Kim, 18, was the youngest U.S. Women’s Amateur champion in history when she grabbed the title in 2006 at  age 14.
Curtis Cupper abound. Two other members of the 2010 U.S. Curtis Cup squad, Jessica Koran and Stephani Kono also punched their tickets to Oakmont. The four will join two other teammates who had earned exemptions into the Open.
Jennifer Song, who will also join the pro ranks following the Curtis Cup, is the reigning U.S. Women’s Amateur and U.S. Women’s Amateur Public Links (WAPL) champion. Song won her 2009 WAPL title at Red Tail Golf Club in Devens, MA, while Jennifer Johnson was runner-up to Song for the 2009 U.S. Women’s Amateur crown.
Sally Watson, a member of the 2010 Great Britain and Ireland Curtis Cup team, also earned her way into the U.S. Women’s Open.
In your own backyard. It’s not often that Boston golfers get to watch future LPGA stars and today’s best amateur women golfers compete in their own backyards, but you have that chance this week. Curtis Cup festivities begin Thursday, while the biennial matches between U.S. golfers and their counterparts from Great Britain and Ireland will run from Friday through Sunday at Essex County Club in Manchester-by-the-Sea, MA.
Visit www.2010curtiscup.com for tickets to the Curtis Cup. It’s $30 each day or $75 for a three-day pass.
