HOLLYWOOD, Fla. – David Schuster of Turner Hill, Mass., made five consecutive birdies on the front nine Thursday and held on for a Minor League Golf Tour victory at Hillcrest Country Club.

At six under par 66, Schuster, 39, won by a shot. He started his streak at the fourth hole and added one more birdie on the back nine, at the 16th. He earned $850 from the $4,702 purse. It was his second MLGT win, the first coming on Feb. 14, 2007 at Bonaventure Country Club in nearby Fort Lauderdale.

Carlos Velez of Miami, Alexis Thompson of Coral Springs and Matthieu Pavon of Fort Lauderdale tied for second at 68. Velez made five birdies, Thompson three birdies on each nine and a bogey at the fifth hole, Pavon seven birdies and two bogeys. Each received $508.34.

It was the second event in a row that Thompson, a rookie on the LPGA tour, finished in the money. She collected $237.50 after she tied for fifth Wednesday at Hammock Creek in Palm City. The LPGA is playing in South Korea this week.

The MLGT’s 117th tournament of the year drew 39 starters. Three more one-day events are scheduled next week: Monday, North Palm Beach CC; Wednesday, President CC, West Palm Beach; and Friday, Santa Lucia River Club, Port St. Lucie. For information and entry, go to www.minorleaguegolf.com.
