BOSTON — For five decades Gary Player has blazed across the golfing landscape, winning 163 tournaments around the world, including nine major championships, while becoming the only player to win the career grand slam on both the PGA and Champions Tour. Long considered golf’s Greatest International Player, with iconic status and one-third royalty in golf’s “Big Three,” Gary Player is truly one of golf’s greatest legends.
On May 19th at the Francis Ouimet Scholarship Fund’s 59th annual banquet held at the Boston Convention & Exhibition Center, Gary Player, affectionately known as the “Black Knight,” for often playing in all black outfits, and for his tremendous physical conditioning, received the 13th Francis Ouimet Award for Lifelong Contributions to Golf. Over 1,400 guests attended, which qualifies this event as the largest golf banquet of its kind in the United States. Also, scholarship proceeds for this year set a new record, exceeding $1.5 million to need-based college students.
