Two weeks ago, Phil Mickelson took some hacks in the batting cage at Fenway Park and followed Keegan Bradley to the mound to toss ceremonial first pitches and kick off the Deutsche Bank Championship. Monday, defending titleholder Dustin Johnson and “Mr. Cub” Ernie Banks, vied for holes-in-one at historic Wrigley Field as a prelude to this week’s BMW Championship at Cog Hill Golf & Country Club outside Chicago.
The Cubs were out of town when baseball Hall of Famer Banks, Johnson, and assorted VIPs hit from a customized tee box in the stands at Wrigley to a “green” constructed in left field. The Evans Scholars Foundation would have donated a id=”mce_marker”00,000 scholarship in the name of the first player to score an hole-in-one.
“I’ve played some great courses and hit some wild shots,” Johnson said before stepping to the tee, “but I never thought I’d be hitting balls from the stands of one of the most iconic ballparks in the country.”
No one fired an ace in the event, which featured two rounds of play. Since Johnson came closest, landing a ball 25.2 feet from the pin, according to NBC Chicago, BMW will donate id=”mce_marker”0,000 in his name to the foundation. All proceeds from the BMW Championship, the third of four FedEx Cup tourneys, will benefit the foundation, which provides university tuition and housing funds to young caddies, according to its website.
