August 5 — Ripping through her opponents one by one, Mary Chamberlain (Cummaquid GC) was in position heading into Thursday’s semifinal match-play contest to repeat as women’s Massachusetts Amateur champion.
It would not be easy for Chamberlain, however, who took on friend and mentor, Tara Joy Connelly, in her Thursday morning joust.
Rematch. Set up as a rematch between last year’s eventual winner and her title match opponent, the Bay State’s perennial player of the year, the semifinalists teed off at Charles River CC Thursday morning.
Chamberlain, 22, notched her first state amateur championship when she beat Connelly, 1-up, in last year’s title tilt at Vesper CC. She advanced to Thursday’s semifinal contest after posting a 1-up win over Mary Mulcahy (Hatherly CC) in the round of 16 match-play event and then overran Natalie Galligan (Brae Burn CC), 6 and 5, in the quarterfinal tourney.
Connolly, the 2003 winner, is also seeking her second state championship triumph. She made it to the semifinals by beating Anne Fraser, 5 and 4, in a quarterfinal match.
Home-course advantage? The other morning semifinal match pitted 2008 state champ Pam Kuong, playing on her home course in Newton, against Kristen MacDonald (Thomson CC).
The finals match will start at 12:10 Thursday afternoon at Charles River.
