October 17 — The weather in New England may be more amenable to football (go, Patriots!) than golf, but for Boston golfers not quite ready to trade in their clubs for the recliner in the TV room, the grand old Cranwell Resort, Spa and Golf Club in Lenox, Mass., has an offer you may be unable to refuse.
Fall back in time. With the resort’s “Fall Back in Time” special, guests stay a second night in the historic mansion for only $18.94. Nope, not a typo; that’s the year W. J. Sloane had the Gilded Age Mansion built in the Berkshire mountains of western Massachusetts. Book one night at the regular, non-discounted rate and stay a second night for under $20.
You’ll pay extra for golf on Cranwell’s 18-hole championship course, but for $48 you’ll get all you can play, plus a cart, for a day until the season ends. The resort special is good through Dec. 21, 2010, except on October weekends and holidays.
For information and reservations, call 800-272-6935 or book online using promotion code FBIT.
Golf the Fox. Two Roger Rulewich gems are offering shoulder-season rates. Golf Crumpin-Fox Club (Bernardston, Mass.), Golf Digest’s No. 1 public course Massachusetts for 2010 for $44 on weekdays and $49 on weekends (carts not included). Call 800-943-1901 or book tee times online. Crump’s sister course, Fox Hopyard GC (East Haddam, Conn.), offers weekday greens fees at $64 and weekends for $74 (cart extra) from now until November 7. Take an additional $25 off from November 8 through closing. Call 800-943-1903 or book tee times online.
Lunch is on them. The Overlook GC (Hollis, N.H.) wants to buy you lunch. Play 18 holes and you’ll receive a $6 voucher for lunch in the club’s snack bar. Offer good for the rest of the season when you play 18 regularly priced holes. Call 603-465-2909 or book tee times online.
Snow golf. It seriously pains this observer to use the “S” word, but there is rehab of sorts for other golfers in serious denial about the woefully short New England golf year. Townsend (Mass.) Ridge CC is accepting memberships for 12 weeks of virtual golf on courses like St. Andrews, Pebble Beach, and Pinehurst on Full Swing golf simulators. Leagues start on December 6 and run Monday through Friday nights, with tee times at 3 p.m., 5 p.m., and 7 p.m. Membership fee is $325. Call 978-597-8400 or send an e-mail.
Join now, play now. Join Newport National GC (Middletown, R.I.) for 2011 and play the rest of the 2010 season as a member. The award-winning links course is a must-play for New England golfers who enjoy links golf at its best. Call 401-848-9690.
