November 2 — The rest of the country has always viewed independent-minded Vermont with a bit of suspicion. Now comes word that three would-be golfers from New England’s Northeast Kingdom have found a way to make a golf ball go really, really far.
Golf ball-firing cannon. After a month-long investigation, Vermont State Police charged three Vermonters with “unlawful mischief” for allegedly causing thousands of dollars in damage to a trailer park by firing golf balls from a potato gun. The 18-year-old man and two juveniles reportedly used a pneumatic potato- or golf ball-firing mechanism — “a pipe-based cannon that uses air pressure to launch projectiles…at high speeds,” according to Wikipedia (so you know it’s true) — to pepper trailers in Gevry Park in Waltham, Vt., with golf balls.
USGA-conforming golf weapon? No word on whether the brain trusts fired away with Titleist Pro V1s from Massachusetts neighbor, Acushnet Co. Come to think of it, wonder when Callaway Golf, Nike, and TaylorMade will petition the USGA to add spud guns to its list of conforming clubs?
The alleged potato-gun perps will appear in Vermont Superior Court in Middlebury on December 6, according to the Burlington Free Press.
The last time someone tried to shoot golf balls, it didn’t work out so well either. Remember when BP pumped golf balls and other debris into a leaking oil well in a failed effort to plug its massive oil spill?
