Sept. 12 — As the New England Patriots put up two quick touchdowns to dispel the nightmare of last year’s playoff disaster, Tiger Woods’ sluggish start in the final round of the BMW Championship has put an end to his playoff run in a disastrous 2010 season.
Not that long ago — say, about a year or so — golf’s No. 1 and the three-time Super Bowl champs were high-flying world-beaters. Then came Tiger’s Thanksgiving night and the Baltimore Ravens’ 33-14 beatdown of the Pats in January. Now, the once-invincible golfer and footballers have plenty of naysayers kicking sand in the former bullies’ faces.
Opposite directions. The Patriots allayed many of their issues — not the least of which were the health of receiver Wes Welker’s surgically repaired knee and strength of its much-maligned defense — with two touchdown strikes from QB Tom Brady to Welker and a first-half 24-3 lead over the Cincinnati Bengals.
Moving in the other direction was Woods, who made the turn at 2-over in his final BMW round and will end his PGA Tour season with many more questions than answers.
Wither Woods? Here are just a few of the question marks for the still top-ranked golfer, who will end the season without a victory for the first time in his career:
- How long, if ever, will it take him to incorporate swing coach Sean Foley’s new techniques into his overall game?
- Will Ryder Cup captain Corey Pavin bench the No. 1 golfer (hint: Pavin said he’s not afraid to sit his captain’s pick)?
- Will Woods finally lose his No. 1 status to perennial No. 2 Phil Mickelson?
- When, if ever, will Woods win again?
