The Dog Days of Summer

Posted in What's News by on August 6th, 2010

As we are at the half way point of the summer I feel it necessary to tell all of the readers of NEGM out there to get out and play.
It is this time of year when we take the long days and gorgeous weather for granted. We start to pick and choose which days we are going to play: touting humidity levels, thermometers showing too much red and spinning weathervanes.
These are the same players that are waiting for me in February to open the doors at 8am, in order to trudge around the course in below freezing temperatures.
I had a phone call yesterday from a member indicating to me that he would be unable to make his 8am tee time on Saturday. Due to the fact the heat index was going to be too high. Heat index? Are you kidding me? On top of that we are talking about a player who rides in cart – and while I consider golf a sport it’s not like we are running a marathon or 5k even. It’s golf!
OK, so this is column is tongue in cheek but there is more truth to this than you may think. It’s human nature to take a good thing (or weather) for granted.
How about the Patriots (3) Championships? The Red Sox making the playoffs? Or your wife cooking dinner 5 nights in a row? Proving the point all good things come to an end.
Sometimes, we just don’t know how well we have it until it is gone. So now is not the time to stop playing or practicing but it is the time to get your second wind and tee it up.
In order to get this same weather in 4 months you would have to hop on a Southwest or JetBlue flight. Stand in security lines that make Walt Disney World feel like a line at
(insert local convenience store here). Get frisked (if your lucky), land, try to identify your black luggage that has 100 twins going around a turnstile and then wait for a rental car as you look at 50 kiosks and only one employee as you wait in a line of 20! Whew! Your not done yet and you’ve already dropped a couple of grand.
So call up your local course, book a tee time and get out there and play regardless of the heat index. Lather up with suntan lotion and enjoy the ideal weather conditions that we are experiencing in New England.
Quick Tips in surviving heat:
1. Freeze a Water bottle and put it in your bag: Makes for an ice pack while frozen to cool you off and a refreshing drink as it thaws. Easy to do, inexpensive and highly effective!
2. Bring a towel other than the one used to clean your clubs: wet the towel from a cooler or hose and put around your neck in between shots in order to cool your core temperature.
3. Wear a non-Cotton shirt: There are many clothing companies that are making high-tech shirts that wick moisture away preventing a shirt that sticks and clings. Wear a shirt lighter in color so not to attract the sun.
4. Hydrate. Hydrate, Hydrate! Water is your friend and a drink with electrolytes is highly effective.
5. Graze on food throughout your round and try to avoid a heavy meal – fruit is fantastic as it is portable and refreshing. A banana is key as it restores your potassium levels as you sweat.
