July 6 — With media outlets breathlessly reporting that Tiger Woods was “curt” and “dismissive” at a Tuesday news conference following his 3-under score of 69 at the J.P. McManus Invitational Pro-Am charity event in Ireland, some golf watchers wonder why such incidents continue to be news.
This is news? Woods’ refusal to answer a reporter’s question about whether his extramarital affairs were “worth it” was a top story during afternoon drive-time on Boston’s WBZ News Radio 1030 (AM), leading this observer to ask, “Huh?”
Good job, though, by the media chap to make himself part of the news, so perhaps he would like an opportunity to answer similar queries. Probably not so much.
It’s one thing for investigative reporters to keep digging for answers into such issues as the BP oil spill, but, really, Tiger Woods’ private life?
Yesterday’s headline. With Woods clearly not going to respond to such queries, and it being, you know, none of anyone’s business but his and his family’s, isn’t it past time to give it a rest? Besides, that’s so 2009/first half of 2010.
It does seem fair game to ask if Woods’ off-course woes are affecting his golf, and the still top-ranked player uncharacteristically conceded that could be the case.
“There are times in one’s life when things get put in perspective, one being when my father passed, and obviously what I’ve been going through lately,” Woods said in his post-golf media meet-up.
Working itself out. A follow-up question along the same lines, however, earned a crisp, “Everything’s working itself out” from Woods, who left Ireland for his Windermere, Fla., home after the tense presser.
Woods flew directly from his T-46th finish at last week’s AT&T National outside Philadelphia to the charity event in Ireland. Reportedly exhausted after his flight, Woods hacked his way to a 7-over 79 at the Adare Manor Golf Course on Monday.
Tiger, who will tee it up in next week’s British Open at St. Andrews, recovered to shoot a 3-under 69 before winging his way stateside to visit his children, he said.
D-I-V-O-R-C-E? He may also have gone home to sign divorce papers. Widespread reports have noted that Woods and his apparently soon-to-be ex-wife Elin Nordegren are nearing the end of their marriage.
Indeed, as Ryan Balengee noted on his Twitter account, The Sun of London said the divorce would be final by July 7. Of course, the publication also reported that Woods would pay Nordegren $750 million, a figure that Forbes Magazine has since debunked.
As always with Tiger Woods, who knows? And, at this point, who really cares?
