Casual golfers know Titleist as “the number one ball in golf,” as the ad claims. They may have missed that PGA Tour golfers like Sunday’s Cadillac Championship winner Nick Watney play Titleist clubs as well.
“We’re number two on the PGA Tour in driver and total metal wood use behind TaylorMade,” said Chris McGinley, Titleist’s VP of golf club marketing.
Titleist, the Massachusetts-based Acushnet company that’s up for sale, targets serious golfers without flashy promos. “We are not about style,” McGinley said in a recent interview. “There are 28 million golfers in the U.S. and we honestly target only about four million of them with our golf clubs.”
The club maker touts the importance of custom fitting clubs to pros and everyday golfers based on loft, lie and face angles, weight of the club head, shaft flex, and other factors. “A lot of people buy equipment now with all the hype on technology alone and are disappointed when the product does not work for them,” he said.
Watney’s custom-fitted sticks certainly worked for him last week at Doral, where he fired a 16-under 272 to beat Dustin Johnson by two strokes. Here’s what Golf.com said the three-time tour winner had in his bag Sunday:
- Driver: Titleist 910D3 (10.5 degree) with a Mitsubishi Rayon Diamana White Board 83 shaft
- Fairway metal: Titleist 910F (15 degree) with Mitsubishi Rayon Diamana White Board 3 shaft
- Hybrid: Titleist 910H (21 degree) with Aldila Voodoo XVS9 shaft
- Irons: Titleist AP2 (3-PW) with True Temper Dynamic Golf shafts
- Wedges: Titleist Vokey Design Spin Milled (54 degree), TVD (60 degree) with True Temper Dynamic Gold shafts
- Putter: Scotty Cameron for Titleist Newport
- Ball: Titleist Pro V1x
Because it’s always about the Red Sox, Watney boasts another Boston connection in addition to his Titleist link. His cousin, Heidi Watney, is a BoSox reporter for Boston-based NESN, flagship TV station of your Boston Red Sox.
