CONCORD, N.H., July 23 — Boston golfers Briana Vega and Chelsea Curtis got off to quick starts at The International at Concord Futures Tour event in New Hampshire.
With a birdie on the seventh hole of the opening round at Concord’s Beaver Meadow Golf Course, Vega (Andover, Mass.) made the turn at 1-under, while Curtis (New Seabury) was also 1-under through five holes.
The two golfers were three shots back of Danah Ford Bordner, who was 4-under through seven at the classic Concord track.
New England tour. There’s lots of golf left to play and plenty of time to get up to Concord to watch tomorrow’s stars of the LPGA tee it up this weekend in the second leg of the Futures Tour New England jaunt.
After hopping up from last week’s LPGA developmental tour event in Connecticut, some 150 women are playing for a $110,000 purse from July 23-July 25. Such LPGA notables as Lorena Ochoa, Christina Kim, Cristie Kerr began their storied careers on classic municipal tracks like Beaver Meadow.
In the money. Five New England golfers pocketed some cash at last week’s ING New England Golf Classic in Bloomfield, Conn. Vermont native Libby Smith (Essex Junction) placed third, while Boston golfer Alison Walshe (Westford, Mass.) tied for eighth. Fellow Bay Staters Curtis, Juli Erekson (Chicopee), and Vega were also in the money.
Vega, Walshe, Curtis, and Erekson are playing in this week’s 54-hole event, with Misun Cho the defending champ. Call 603-224-5301, ext. 290 or click here to purchase tickets ($15 per day; $25 for a three-day pass) for the July 23-July 25 tourney.
