Vintage Red Auerbach golf bag and clubs to sell at

Posted in What's News by on March 15th, 2011

You don’t have to be a Boston Celtics fan to bid on a vintage golf bag and set of clubs owned by the late Celtics legend Arnold “Red” Auerbach — but it wouldn’t hurt.

A certified pre-owned red leather-trimmed Wilson Staff golf bag and a set of clubs will be part of a collection of Auerbach memorabilia that will go to auction in April. SCP Auctions will offer the equipment as a separate lot among a smorgasbord of items commemorating Red’s part of Celtics history. The three-part online auction will take place between April 15 and April 30.

The 1961 NBA All-Star golf sack sports Auerbach’s name. The eight Wilson irons (PW-2 — yes, a 2-iron; the gruff Auerbach, who died in 2006, would probably scoff at a hybrid) are Sam Snead signatures.

You may also bid on a Spalding Jack Pot putter and another flat stick of unknown origin, with “made expressly for Red Auerbach” engraved on the back side of the face. Auerbach’s persimmon Wilson Strata Bloc 4300 1-wood and fairway woods are part of the package as well. No word yet on what SCP will set as the opening bid.

For the uninitiated (and those too young to remember), Auerbach won eight straight NBA championships and had only one losing season in 16 years as Celtics coach. And that only scratches the surface of Auerbach’s accomplishments as coach, president, general manager, and basically the “heart and soul” of the Celtics, as Frank Deford wrote in Sports Illustrated in 1972.
